When is Diwali 2017?

This Year Diwali 2017 is on 19th October 2017. Diwali is the festival of lights, joy and happiness and is celebrated all over India. It is the most popular and awaited festival in India.

Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” means “Rows of Lamps”. Diwali (Divali, Dipawali, Deepavali, Dipabali) is a festival of physical and spiritual light celebrated on 15th day “New Moon Day” of the Hindu month of Kartika. Diwali is the festival of lights, crackers, gifts and sweets and it is a five-day celebration festival. Followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism observe various customs related to Diwali. There is a gazette holiday in India on Diwali, all the government offices and most of the businesses were remained closed for five days so people have a day off work.

Five Days of Diwali 2017:

Diwali is the festival of lights and is the most popular of all the festivals in India. Diwali celebrations may last for up to five days. The Five days of Diwali is celebrated in the following manner in many regions:

Day 1. Dhanteras – The word Dhan means wealth and Teras means the 13th lunar day of Krishnapaksh of Ashwin in the hindu calender. On this day goddess lakshmi is worshipped for wealth and prosperity and it is considered as the beginning of the financial year for most of the Indian businesses.

Day 2. Naraka Chaturdasi – This day is also known as “Kali Chaudas’. This is the day to abolish the laziness and evil sources which create hell in our life and enlightening the life with joy and enthusiasm. On this day oil baths are taken, people wear new clothes and prepared delicacies (called Poha or Pova).

Day 3. Diwali – On the 3rd day, new moon day festival of Diwali is celebrated. People decorate their homes and workplaces with tiny electric lights or small clay oil lamps (diya). Bowls of water with candles and flowers floating on the surface are also popular form of decorations found these days among youngsters. Fireworks are set off in the evening by the children with their family members.

Day 4. New Year – This day is mark as the beginning of the Hindu New Year. As a part of New Year celebrations people wear new clothes and meeting with friends and family, exchanging gifts, best wishes, greetings and feasting are the part of colorful festival.

Day 5. Bhai Duj – The fifth and the last of Diwali is Bhai Duj. The reason why this festival is known as bhai dooj is that it falls on the second day after the new moon and it is a day to pray for the long life of the brother. It is the day of food sharing, gift giving and reaching the inner most depth of the hearts to strengthen the love between brothers and sisters.

Before few days of Diwali, many people make a special effort to clean their homes and yards. The doorways are hung with torans of mango leaves and marigold flowers. Girls and women decorates their houses by lightning Diyas and make beautiful rangoli designs on the floor at the entrance of the doorstep or courtyards. Many people are doing Laxmi Puja in the evening on this particular day, to be blessed by Goddess Laxmi with wealth and prosperity. Firecrakers are set off by children to drive away evil forces. On this day people wear new clothes and give gifts of sweets, greeting cards and some time gold jewellery or coin to family members, close friends and business associates. Deepavali melas are also held in many towns and villages, being enjoyed by Hindus, Jain, Sikhs & Buddhist.
